Climate
The climate of Ukraine is temperate continental, with a subtropical Mediterranean climate prevalent on the southern portions of the Crimean Peninsula. The average monthly temperature in winter ranges from -8° to 2° C, while summer temperatures average 17° to 25° C. Precipitation generally decreases from north to south; it is greatest in the Carpathians, where it exceeds more 1,500 mm.
Russia encompasses a number of distinct climatic zones, which generally extend across the country in east-west belts. Moscow, which lies in the temperate continental climate zone, has average temperatures of -9.4° C in January and 18.9° C in July. St Petersburg, which is subject to the moderating influences of the Baltic Sea, averages -8.3° C in January and 17.8° C in July.
